Poll: Drew Carey a Frontrunner for Republican Senate Nomination in Ohio

Public Policy Polling has released more poll results, this time showing Drew Carey one of the top frontrunners for the Republican Senate nomination in Ohio.  Drew garners 12% of the vote, to Jon Husted’s 14% and Ken Blackwell’s 17%.  This puts Drew a mere 5 percentage points away from the lead, almost within the poll’s +/- 4.9% margin of error.

Poll: Drew Carey the Most Electable Republican in Ohio

Public Policy Polling has come out with a new poll showing Drew Carey faring as good or better than all the other noteworthy potential candidates for Republican Senate nominee in 2012.

Carey earns 34% to incumbent Democrat Senator Sherrod Brown’s 49%–the same numbers as Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted.  Everyone else trails by larger margins: State Treasurer Josh mandel trails Brown by 16 points, Rep. Steve LaTourette by 18 points, and Rep. Jim Jordan and Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor by 19 points.

Carey fares the best among independent voters, trailing Brown by only 15 points, while every other Republican trails anywhere between 18 and 25 points.  Carey also fares the best among moderate voters, of any Republican candidate.

Carey has, by far, the best favorables of any Republican, with 29% favorable and 13% unfavorable ratings (a surplus of +16%).  All other Republicans have favorables surpluses/deficits between +2% to -3%.  Carey is the only Republican candidate to earn a positive favorability rating from independents, from whom he gets a surplus of 11%.  Carey has a huge favorability surplus of +22% with moderates, while the other Republican candidates have favorability surpluses/deficits of +1% to -14%.  Carey is far and away the favorite Republican candidate with both male and female voters as well.

In light of this new scientific polling showing that Drew Carey has the best shot of any major Ohio Republican, we renew our call to Carey to please consider coming home and running for Senate–not just for his own career, but to fight for the freedom we so desperately need!

Drew Doesn’t Close the Door on Senate Run

At last! The long wait is over! Drew Carey has finally addressed the Senate draft effort–or, at least, his publicist, Christina Papadopoulos, has. Papadopoulos told Politico’s David Catanese that Drew currently “has no plans to run,” which is what we already all knew. Whether he might make plans at any point in the next year and a half, if presented with a strong display of support from the grassroots, is a possibility that was conspicuously left open.

Update: Drew himself has finally spoken out, telling The Cleveland Leader, “I am not considering a run for the Senate.” We hope we can convince him to begin considering it! The positive mark he could make on the history of Ohio and of America would be far more momentous than a career on gameshows only!

We are still encouraged by Drew’s refusal to categorically rule out a future run and call upon him even more strongly to consider fighting for our individual liberties back here in Ohio. He could easily return to television after a stint of political service, and has nothing to lose but the onerous government regulations he could help to slash in the Senate.

Drew on the Issues

• Drew on the free market: “Some people don’t like competition because it makes them work harder, better. I’m competitive at everything. It’s a natural driving force, a way of testing yourself, of measuring how you’re doing. How can people not know that competition makes everything better?”

• Drew on government power: “P.J. O’Rourke once said the government has passed enough laws — it should just stop. It oversteps its bounds so often. Giving it a little bit of power is like getting a little bit pregnant…”

• Drew on small businesses: “It’s a bottom-line thing for businesses: they want lower taxes and less red tape.  Simple as that.”

• Drew on education: “It would be best for the parents and families to have a choice to send their kids where they want–to make the schools compete against each other.”

• Drew on immigration: “One way out of this [immigration] mess would be to simply allow peaceful workers to enter our country through legal ports of entry.  If we did that, we could stimulate our economy, bring a huge underground labor market out into the open, and we could put unscrupulous smugglers out of business.  More importantly, we’d free up border patrol resources that could be used to fight criminals and terrorism.”

• Drew on entitlements/welfare: “As far as your personal goals are and what you actually want to do with your life, it should never have to do with the government. You should never depend on the government for your retirement, your financial security, for anything.”

• Drew on censorship: “What right does [a politician] have to tell me what I can and cannot watch? Change the channel if you don’t like what’s on TV!”

• Drew on property rights: “The great thing about America is that once you own property, you own it.  You can do anything you want with it.  You own it.  The only way somebody can take your property is if they steal it–that’s why the government invented eminent domain.”

• Drew on drug laws: “Liquor prohibition led to the rise of organized crime in America, and drug prohibition has led to the rise of the gang problems we have now.”

• Drew on freedom versus security: “I think a lot of people are afraid of freedom. They want their lives to be controlled, to be put into a box… People like that cradle-to-grave concept because it says you don’t have to think too much, you don’t have to worry too much, because someone else is looking out for you. But that also means you can’t do as much as you want. Why should someone else put a limit on how much fun I can have; how much I can accomplish?”

Why Drew

The national debt is spiraling out of control.

Our individual freedoms are eroding by the day.

The size and reach of government is outrageous.

There are few individuals who truly understand what is at stake, and even fewer who have what it takes to go to Washington and give a voice to the People.  Drew Carey is one of them.  Drew is one of the great television personalities and comedians of our time, but to Drew, the state of the nation is no joke.

We are Americans who call Ohio home, and are tired of watching helplessly while our state and country are ravaged by reckless and misguided government policies.  We are Americans who agree with Drew that “the answers to all the problems we face as a society won’t come from Washington. They will come from us.”

We are calling upon Drew to go to Washington and help break the shackles of the leviathan, so that we can finally be free as a society to solve the problems we face.

After searching high and low for an acceptable candidate for the US Senate from Ohio in 2012, we found that only Drew has the smarts, the principles, the name recognition, and the popularity to win and to truly represent us in our fight for the only thing we want: our freedom.

We encourage Drew to enter the Republican primary for US Senate, as the best way to truly impact the policy debate.

About Drew

Drew Carey was the youngest of Lewis and Beulah Carey’s three sons and raised in Parma, Ohio. He graduated from James Ford Rhodes High School in 1975.

He continued on to college at Kent State University, and after leaving the university, Carey enlisted into the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1980 and served for six years. He relocated to Las Vegas for a few months in 1982, and for a short time worked as a bank teller and a waiter at Denny’s.

In 1985, he began his comedy career by writing jokes for a Cleveland radio show, and for the next few years, he performed at multiple comedy clubs in Cleveland and Los Angeles. He was first brought to the national eye as a comedian when he competed in the 1988 Star Search. Carey appeared on The Tonight Show, and Late Night with David Letterman, and played small roles on several television shows.  In 1995, the wildly successful Drew Carey Show was born, which turned Carey into a household name.

In 1998, Carey hosted the comedy improv show, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, and in 2007, Carey replaced retiring Bob Barker as host of The Price Is Right.

Carey vocally defends the principles of limited government, individual liberty, and free markets, having worked with the Reason Foundation on a mini-series entitled, “The Drew Carey Project,” in which Carey gets to the root of issues facing America and calls for common-sense libertarian reforms.

Carey summarizes his political views saying:

“I believe the answers to all the problems we face as a society won’t come from Washington.  They will come from us.”
